Climate Change and ‘Last-chance Tourism’

A lot of climate discussion revolves around time. Lines rise across charts predicting the next century. As the Earth warms, natural wonders — coral reefs, glaciers, archipelagos — are at risk of damage and disappearance. This has motivated some travelers to engage in “last-chance tourism,” visiting places threatened by climate change before it’s too late. (Early tourists included Mary Shelley and Mark Twain.)

He’s Probably in Your House, Lurking on Your Bookshelf

It appears on book covers by everyone from Jane Austen to William Faulkner to Martin Amis, but naming specific examples is a silly exercise. Walk into any bookshop and you’ll find that a good number of book covers feature Bodoni, a typeface created by Giambattista Bodoni in the late 18th century. If you read books, a piece of Bodoni is probably lurking on your shelf in gorgeous silence right now. Brand logos that either are Bodoni or owe a serious debt to it include Valentino, La Mer, Calvin Klein and Brookstone. A graphic designer seeking shorthand for “sophisticated” might reach for Bodoni or one of its relatives.

In 2023, her first full year of embracing the status of "influencer," Frankel earned $3.2 million in endorsement deals, according to documents reviewed by BI. Photo by Heidi GutmanFrankel's path from reality TV to Skinnygirl to actingFor the unfamiliar, Frankel wasn't just in reality TV — she made Housewives history when she founded Skinnygirl Cocktails and then sold it in 2011. The deal was big enough to prompt networks to include so-called "Bethenny Clauses" in reality TV contracts, which require reality stars to give the networks a cut of businesses promoted on air. "I left reality TV and honestly thought the faucet would turn off because that's what happens, and I was fine with that," she said.

People take part in a rally supporting Palestinians in Gaza, as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, at the National Monument (Monas) complex in Jakarta, Indonesia, November 5, 2023. "Indonesia Hospital in Gaza is a facility built by Indonesians fully for humanitarian purposes and to serve the medical needs of Palestinians in Gaza," said the ministry said in a statement, adding the hospital is run by Palestinian authorities, helped by a few Indonesian volunteers. Sarbini Abdul Murad, the chairman of MER-C, a voluntary group which funded the Indonesia hospital, told Reuters on Tuesday the hospital had run out of fuel, and had "collapsed". On Monday, Sarbini denied Israel's accusations, adding that it was a "precondition so that they can attack the Indonesian hospital in Gaza". Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, has called for an immediate ceasefire and has sent humanitarian aid to Gaza.

But by examining car registration data T&E said that, with the exception of ALD, the leasing companies' claims are false. "Our investigation clearly shows that all leasing companies... are making green leadership claims that are not backed up by evidence," the report says. "In other words, leasing companies are greenwashing." Across the EU as a whole, T&E found EVs made up just over 10% of leasing companies' car purchases, the same share as for the rest of the market. "What remains unclear is whether the major leasing companies will take these steps or remain rooted in the fossil age."

German economic weakness belies France's outperformance
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( Leigh Thomas | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
The European Commission said on Monday the two economies were on diverging paths this year with Germany forecast to be in a recession with a 0.4% contraction and France expected to grow 1.0%. With weak construction and declining construction investment weighing on Europe's biggest economy, Germany's outlook was slashed from a previous forecast for 0.2% growth while France was upgraded from 0.7%. The contrasting fortunes of the euro zone's two biggest economies can also be explained by tailwinds working against Germany and headwinds helping France. Germany's gas-hungry chemical industry has seen production fall 18% from 2019 levels while in France it is only 8%, Colombier said. That leaves few props to lend support to French growth going forward other than household savings.

Johann convinced Nargeolet to write his book 'In the depths of the Titanic' because he said his kids were super-fans. The underwater explorer needed convincing to write a book, Johann said, because he wanted to spend all of his time diving. CAREER IN FRENCH NAVYDirector of underwater research for RMS Titanic, which owns the rights to the ship's remains, Nargeolet started researching and exploring the Titanic wreck when he joined the French ocean research institute Ifremer in 1986, after a 22-year career in the French navy. They met after Marsh contacted the explorer to ask for the contact of a Frenchman who had survived the Titanic. The president of RMS Titanic, Jessica Sanders, said in a statement on Wednesday that Nargeolet's experience was unparalleled and "no-one has a better chance of navigating equipment failures than he does".

May 1 (Reuters) - An unexplained power outage at Manila airport's Terminal 3 on Monday led to about 40 domestic Cebu Pacific (CEB.PS) flights being cancelled, the airport said. "Flight delays are expected due to the outage", the Ninoy Aquino International Airport said in a statement posted on Facebook, without disclosing the cause of the power failure. Standby power systems were supplying electricity to critical facilities enabling airline and immigration computers to function partially and enable processing of both inbound and outbound passengers, it said. Paris CNN —More than a million people took to the streets across France on Thursday with protests turning violent in some areas as demonstrators voiced their fury at proposed pension reforms. At least 80 people were arrested and 123 police officers injured in France on Thursday during the nationwide protests, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. The gate of the Bordeaux city hall after it was set on fire during a demonstration on a national day of action, on March 23 in Bordeaux, southwestern France. French riot police apprehend a protester amid clashes during a demonstration against pension reform in Paris on March 23, 2023. It rammed the legislation through the French National Assembly last week using a constitutional clause that allows the government to bypass a vote.
The president, the government and the majority," a senior MP in Macron's camp, Gilles Le Gendre, told Liberation newspaper. Another MP in Macron's camp, Patrick Vignal, bluntly urged the president to suspend the pension reform bill, which will raise the retirement age by two years to 64, given the anger it has triggered, and its deep unpopularity. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes 1 2 3 4 5While Borne said the administration would try in future to better involve citizens and unions in lawmaking, she gave no specifics, and both said they had devoted as much time to dialogue on the pension bill as possible. Other opposition MPs urged Macron to fire Borne, call snap elections and hold a referendum on the pension bill because of the widespread anger. Polls show a wide majority of French are opposed to the pension reform, as well as the government's decision to push the bill through parliament without a vote.

[1/2] Migrants leave a French maritime protection vessel, as the boat they were travelling in with 60 other migrants began to take water in the English Channel, in an attempt to reach Britain, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, November 29, 2022. The new legislation will mean that anyone who arrives on small boats will be prevented from claiming asylum and deported to so-called safe third countries, according to government officials, who asked not to be named. The court subsequently ruled it lawful in December, but opponents are seeking to appeal that verdict. It is expected the legal battle will end up in the UK Supreme Court and may not be resolved for months. Once the small-boat crossings have ended, Britain would be prepared to create more legal routes for asylum seekers, Sunak said last year.
Today, the hulk of the 80-flat Le Signal apartment block perches precariously on a dune just metres from the water and local authorities are tearing it down before it tumbles. By 2010, the ocean was lapping at the dune on which Le Signal was built. "Le Signal's situation is largely symbolic for what is happening in terms of coastal erosion France," he said. He said ever-rising sea levels and increasingly violent storms made it impossible to let people live in Le Signal without costly shore protection measures that could also have negatively impacted nearby shorelines. "Le Signal is a warning for what could happen in other zones and for the need to prepare for it now," he said.
